They say that a bird in the hand ...

is worth two in the bush.

What is the worth of one bird dead in the bush?

What is the worth of one dead bird in the hand?

I honestly don't know. Is there a difference?

I found one during spring clean-up, when I was cutting the dead leaves
off the red peony ... a female sparrow, all beige and dehydrated,
crawling with new life ... in the middle of the crumbling, brown
foliage. I almost didn't see it. Some brain/eye perceptor noticed that
it wasn't the same shape as the leaves, and alerted my conscious
mind/eye. It must have died while perched on the metal cage that I use
to support the peony, and then keeled over into the foliage. Or maybe it
was trying to shelter among the dead leaves when its life ended. I
rarely see dead birds, and I've never seen one dead in the bush, 'til
now ... for whatever that's worth.

"I never saw a wild thing

The brawling of a sparrow in the eaves,
The brilliant moon and all the milky sky,
And all that famous harmony of leaves,
Had blotted out man's image and his cry.

A girl arose that had red mournful lips
And seemed the greatness of the world in tears,
Doomed like Odysseus and the labouring ships
And proud as Priam murdered with his peers;

Arose, and on the instant clamorous eaves,
A climbing moon upon an empty sky,
And all that lamentation of the leaves,
Could but compose man's image and his cry.

--William Butler Yeats - The Sorrow Of Love

sorry for itself.
Even the tiniest sparrow will drop dead from a bough
never having felt
sorry for itself."

It has me to feel sorry for it.
